Accommodation
To avoid complications people travelling to Spain are advised to arrange accommodation before they go. There are many possibilities according to preferences and purchasing power.

Renting

It is advisable to look in the press for classified adverts for accommodation. University notice boards may also provide information.
Estate agents charge an additional monthly payment in advance and a commission, which is normally equivalent to one month's rent.

A lease must be drawn up with the owner; preferably in written form.

Any problems connected with renting accommodation can be referred to the Oficina Municipal de Información al Consumidor (OMIC) (Municipal Consumer Information Bureau), Asociaciones de Consumidores y Usuarios (Consumers and Users Associations) or Juntas Arbitrales de Consumo (Consumer Arbitration Boards).

Some local councils provide general information on renting and purchasing property and lists of rented flats for young people, while national and some Autonomous Community youth programmes and organisations offer young people help in getting accommodation.

Purchase

Estate agents deal with the purchase of properties in Spain.

If you are going to buy a property, the legal transaction will have to be supervised by a notary. Any ordinary or savings bank will provide information on the cost of mortgages and the respective formalities.

On a half-yearly basis, the Sociedad de Tasación (property valuation society) produces a bulletin that shows average property prices, statistics on the development of prices and forecasts.

Temporary Accommodation

While you are looking for fixed housing, tourist offices can provide you with a list of temporary accommodation.

The Instituto de la Juventud (Institute for Young People) has signed cooperation agreements with local councils to provide temporary rented accommodation for young people, particularly those on low incomes.

Further Information

There are student halls of residence, linked to and independent from educational institutions, whose offer is worthwhile consulting if you are having a short practical or study trip.
