E Forms - General Overview

E forms aim to co-ordinate the social security systems of the member states of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. They are standardised throughout the EU and enable workers and their family members to maintain the right to services for illness, unemployment or retirement when they move to another country from the one that recognised the right.

The most important E forms

1. Series E-100 to obtain the right to services for illness, maternity and moving:

  • E-101 for workers whose company relocates, to carry out work in the territory of another country of the Community;
  • E-104 to certify periods of insurance, employment and residence in each EU Member State;
  • E-109 to obtain the right to services for illness in moving for studies or work as an au pair;
  • E-111 for urgent health care during short trips to another Member State, for example while on holiday or on business;
  • E 119 for unemployed workers and their family members. It is used together with E-303.

Note: Since 1 June 2004 Spain has substituted E-111 and E-119 with the European health insurance card (TSE).

2. Series E-200 to calculate retirement pensions

3. Series E-300 to calculate unemployment benefit payments:

  • E-301 certifies the contribution periods to take into account when calculating unemployment benefits. You must obtain it before leaving an EU country in which you have worked.
  • E-302 to accredit which members of a worker's family should be taken into account when calculating unemployment benefits.
  • E-303 to transfer the right to receive unemployment benefits to an EU country other than the country of residence. The maximum transfer period is three months. It is used together with E-119 or the European health insurance card.

4. Series E-400 for the right to family services.
