New Cricket Club on Costa Blanca

tallbob writes in Sport & Leisure

Hi
A Cricket Espana qualified Coach called John Algar has been coaching Cricket on La Marina Urbanisation for about 2 years and he is now in a position to put the club on a firmer footing

To this end a committee has been established and we have met a few times already
all of us are giving our time willingly and we take no monies of any sort for doing so,
My name Is Robert ( Bob ) and I have joined as seniors captain as I am still playing regularly here in Spain

Our name stems from Johns love of Lancashire C.C ( god being a Surrey man and playing in Yorkshire for 18 years I hate typing that ) so we started as La Marina Lightning then San Fulgencio Lightning after talks with the town hall now we are
San Fulgencio Lightning Club De Cricket

A few weeks ago our first match took place between lads and dads as well as various stalls refreshments etc none of this could have been done without a lot of hard work being put in behind the scenes and I was very impressed by everyones willingness to put the work in and the lads enjoyed it which at the end of the day makes it all worthwhile, and we managed to get some funds for the Club as well as being able to donate some monies to 2 charities

We had the full backing of the Mayor as well as the Minister of Sport at San Fulgencio Council and the medals and cups awarded looked very impressive also a mention must be made of Mark Lewis who's advice was useful

We have had a lot of Backing from Cricket Espana ( who are based in La Manga ) and in particular ex Middlesex C.C. administrator George Wambeek and he has agreed to be our Vice president

there are ongoing talks between the Club, Cricket Espana and the Council over some land for a full size Cricket pitch and these seem to be progressing, however we cannot play without players and as well as an intoduction about our club it is an appeal for anyone in the San Fulgencio or wider area to come and have a chat a bat or a bowl and see if you like Cricket

John provides coaching every Saturday at 3 on the Market Place we provide all the
equipment and there is no charge of any sort and anyone regardless of age or sex are welcome to come along, whilst I am mentioning charges we do only make one charge we hire a minibus to take some younger players to La Manga and Alfas for further specialised coaching we ask for 5 euros from each passenger and this goes some way to cover what is a large cost for us

If you are interested in Playing, helping out or would like more information then please contact John 605 528 652 or email Deb at cricket@lamarina.info

I'm female and would like to learn to play-will women get a chance to play in matches and do you have to totally understand the rules of play or do you teach that at training as well?

Hi Sweethome

I am not sure where you are, but this weeks coast rider had the entire back page devoted to our club and one thing we stressed to the reporter and was mentioned that we are very keen to get a Womens team together, so in answer to the first part of your question we would love to have you and there would be no problem in playing in our matches

It may interest you to know that I play regularly at Alfas and we play a lot of touring teams and quite often they play some women in their teams in fact the last one bowled me first ball!!

Regarding the rules, I do not believe that most players understand every rule, but that's why the matches are controlled by umpires, no one is their to make anyone look foolish and anything that you need to know we will explain to you, and we have some women on board already and no doubt they are thinking the same things that you are

We are La Manga this Sunday so if you'd like to come, get back in touch, hope to hear from you

And for a bit of fun we are arranging a beach Cricket Match late in July

Bob
