AngloINFO Languedoc Update

Monday 9th April 2007

High Days and Holidays

Public holiday, bank holiday, festivo, call it what you will, for workers this can be a beacon on the annual calendar. Some days, like the upcoming Labour Day/Workers Day holiday of May 1 are pretty much international; others are celebrated regionally only, such as Easter Monday in Catalonia or Madrid's Fiesta de la Communidad on May 2. National days are just that, uniquely national - think Día Nacional on October 12!

Breaks and bridges

In some countries (notably the UK), public holidays which fall on a weekend are replaced by an off day the following Monday. This is not the case in Spain.

However, when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the odds are high that many smaller and family run businesses will close, doing the traditional thing, and hacer puente or "make the bridge", turning the period into a four-day holiday.
